Jaguar i-Space concept
Joe McGhee, Harry Richards and Will Sack

“We decided that privacy and personal space will be considered the biggest luxury [in the year 2050],” say second-year UWTSD students Joe McGhee, Harry Richards and Will Sack.

Working to create a concept suitable for busy young families, the Jaguar i-Space ¬ was designed around a PUI (preliminary user identification) system, which determines the number of users and their use intention. The vehicle then reconfigures the interior accordingly, learning the user’s routines and building a personal connection with them along the way.

Proximity activated cascading doors — which ‘disappear’ visually – provide access to the interior and its three pre-set seating arrangements. In Family mode, four seats face each other for everyday travel; in the Business mode two seats are arranged opposite each other, with an adjustable divider in the middle to create small office space; and in the Executive mode the seats at the rear are positioned side by side.

The i-Space’s windowless interior has 360-degree panoramic view coined the ‘Active Panoramic viewing display’ which is projected onto the surfaces. The view is different from each passenger’s perspective. The ‘sensory recognition technology’ monitors the passengers and adapts the experience accordingly, setting the temperature, selecting the in-car entertainment functions or changing the route based on the user’s thoughts.

Seen from the exterior, the concept’s cab forward design, long front overhang and shape and proportions were inspired by the leaping Jaguar logo and the animal’s squat, ‘ready to pounce’ demeanor, which provided inspiration for the wheel haunches. The chrome strip around the front is directly inspired from the Jaguar E-Type. The concaved sections double up as the ‘self-loading internal storage system’ where these sections slide out from the i-Space and collect the users’ luggage and arrange them in the internal storage compartments.
